Is nihilism just as contagious as smiles?
I feel strangely different after meeting with the dragon. After learning how it is to be scared, "I had no intention of terrifying Hrothgar's thanes for nothing" (76). While spying, one man ruined it for everyone, including me. The Shaper was already in the process of angering me when humans approached me! I had no choice but to kill him even though he caused me no harm (thanks to the dragon's spell). Human life is so fragile, why not take advantage of it? I decided to attack the meadhall a couple days after, I was so powerful! it felt amazing! But also lonely... What is existence? I exist and the villagers exist but I am not wanted by them. Why bother? Why not just kill them all? It's easier that way.

During one of my raids, I met a idiotic man named Unferth. I humiliated him and then pelted him with apples. He dared to say "monster, prepare to die!" (82), so I just had to do that. He ended up following me home, obsessed much? He kept going on and on about how he's a hero and is doing the right thing but he ended up contradicting himself, silly human! After making such broad statements, I put him back in his place and hurt his tiny ego. No matter how many times I attack or put them in their place, humans will always be hypocrites and think they're the best. They sing about how they were victorious against my attacks. They sing that they are the best when they result to war and ruin the land. They sing about the heroes of the past who were probably no better. Humans are egotistical if you ask me.

I like the bit of a modern spin you put on Grendel with the line "obsessed much?" The way you described Unferth in Grendel's voice was somehow even more degrading than the novel (that's a good thing, it kind of made me laugh). You made Grendel seem very personable despite being a monster, and even made him seem a bit like a moody teenager; I don't know if that was intended or not, but it was a nice touch. You did a good job summarizing the chapter in such a concise way, yet still managed to keep Grendel's tone of voice in the condensed synopsis, so kudos. The music selection was also very choice. It fits perfectly both with Grendel's angst and his anger towards the humans' hypocrisy.

Again, really great work here! The analysis is fantastic, and I especially loved the way you used music as one of your medias here. I also agree with Schmidt above on the use of a teenagers tone. I think it adds a whole new meaning to this chapter. I would have enjoyed getting to look at Unferth a bit more. You did mention him a little, but I would love for Grendel to take a second and process Unferth swimming down to his cave just to talk to him. It's not particularly a necessary edit here, but I think it would add even more depth to where you are in this post. Other than that, I agree with everything, and I found this piece really excellent!
ReplyDeleteFantastic work once again! One thing I really love about reading blogs or entries in general is the fact that there is a brief summary, as well as the analysis required. I love the quotes you used, and great job on the correct formatting! I did mention in your previous entry that something that you may add is the chapter that goes with the blog post. This is the first blog that I have seen with a title. Great job on the creativity with that! From what I am reading, I am inferring that this is for Chapter 6, which goes with the philosophy of skepticism. There were hints of that in the blog, and I really enjoyed! Can't wait to read your future posts.
